Grosseto and its jewels, between land and sea: the Maremma region
Choose a holiday or a tour in the Maremma region, the wild heart of Tuscany, discovering intense colors and flavors, deep-rooted traditions and varied landscapes. Some know it's the land of Etruscans and Tuscan cowboys (called “butteri”). Sunny Tuscany & Italy offers many different proposals for charming stays and trips to discover the wonders of this region. Enjoy all that Maremma has to offer including great wines and flavorful dishes.

The cultural heart of the Maremma region, Grosseto is a lovely Medieval town completely surrounded by sixteenth-century walls and dominated by the imposing Medici Fortress: the old center, with the Romanesque Cathedral and the small Church of St. Francis is almost entirely a pedestrian area, far from the hustle and bustle of big cities.
The part of the Maremma region which is in the province of Grosseto extends from the Gulf of Follonica to the border of the Lazio region, among the Colline Metallifere, the Monte Amiata and the Tyrrhenian See. It is the real heart of the whole region: an area made up of endless wilderness lands with free-range animals (in some areas still guided by the “butteri”, the legendary cowboys and shepherds on horseback), ancient Medieval villages, lush Mediterranean vegetation, rolling hills, olive groves, vineyards, chestnut woods and a limpid sea of innumerable shades of blue. In this region you can find many lovely seaside resorts, such as Follonica, Punta Ala, Castiglione della Pescaia, Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare, surrounded by a lush pine forest and bordering on the Natural Park of the Maremma Region (the oldest natural park in Tuscany). The Natural Park of the Maremma Region is one the most interesting destinations in the province of Grosseto and can be visited on foot, by bike, horse, canoe or carriage, discovering its wonderful hills, sandy beaches, high cliffs, marshes and pine groves and its beautiful coastal resorts Marina di Alberese and Talamone. Further south, near the border with the Lazio region, lies the beautiful "Silver Coast": the Argentario Promontory, joined to the
mainland by only two strips of sandy land, with its breathtaking views and the pleasant towns of Orbetello, Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, rich in history and natural beauties. Close to the border with the Lazio region, in the hinterland, you can find the small village of Capalbio, with its original ‘Park of Tarot Cards’, and the so-called "Tuff Ring": a landscape characterized by softer shapes and then more rugged and naturalistic forms of tufa rock, characterized by isolated plateaus separated by steep ravines and narrow valleys. You can visit the tuff towns of Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana. Not far from the tuff area, in the hilly inland of the Albegna and Fiora streams, you will find the pleasant town of Scansano, renowned for its great red wine Morellino, and Saturnia, famous for its healing sulfur hot springs and its spas.
